Return to Main Project of the Month Page
This month we focused on an oak side-by-side brought in for restoration. Although meant to be utilitarian, side-by-sides are charming, decorative pieces. One half is a bookcase and one half serves as a desk. The drop down lid hides the pigeon hole storage area. Most have a framed mirror above the desk area. The one brought in for restoration was missing this feature. Our customer had never seen the side-by-side with the mirror and decided against trying to replace it.
The piece was completely disassembled and stripped of all finish. Then the repairs began. You can see part of the clamping done to keep the frame tight and square during gluing. We replaced part of the outside back due to warpage. The center trim piece is original and kept to keep the feel of the piece. Holes were filled and hardware reset. We replaced the glass.
The side by side and all its components were then sanded, sealed and finished in the oak’s natural color with a satin sheen.
This “utilitarian” piece can now be displayed proudly.
